Minimum Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Prior mailing or postal service experience is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Applicants must possess a current, valid PA driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain it throughout employment.

About the Role

The Mail Processor performs all duties related to providing mailing services and operations on a daily basis for the County according to the USPS and UPS regulations. This position reports directly to the Clerk Supervisor of Mailing Services and is under the general oversight of the Mail Room Manager.

The County’s Mailing Services Division provides efficient and cost-effective postal and inter-office messenger services to all Allegheny County and City of Pittsburgh departments; to the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC); and to the Allegheny County Jail. The Division successfully processes an average of six million pieces of mail per year with the implementation of updated equipment, new automated tracking systems, and trained staff.

Responsibilities

  • Operates multi-purpose sorter and postal machinery.
  • Completes data entry/typing.
  • Sorts and distributes internal mail to various County departments and the City of Pittsburgh.
  • Performs heavy lifting.
  • Makes occasional trips to various postal offices/locations.
  • Works at other locations as required, which may include working at the Mailing Services section within the County Jail Department.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Skills

  • Basic computer operations.
  • Regulations of USPS and UPS are preferred, but training will be provided.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).

Qualifications

  • Efficiently and effectively work, with minimal supervision, alone and within a group.
  • Run postal equipment and work in a fast-paced mail operations environment in accordance with USPS and UPS regulations.
  • Work standing up for extended periods of time daily.
  • Lift between 50 and 100 lbs.
  • Effectively manage time, tasks, deadlines, and multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Drive to off-site locations for mail pick-up and drop-off.
  • Accurately perform data entry.

Residency

Must reside in Allegheny County within 1 year.

Veterans' Preference
