Machinist II

About the role

Astec is a global, environmentally focused infrastructure and manufacturing company specializing in asphalt road building and aggregate processing. The Machinist (CNC/Manual) programs and operates one or more CNC machining centers to perform drilling, tapping, milling, boring, and other machining operations on a range of surfaces, diameters, and depths. This role involves determining operation sequences, selecting and adjusting tools, and setting up complex job configurations, often requiring milling to very close tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Study blueprints, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces.
• Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining; adjust machine controls or control media as required.
• Inspect finished workpieces to ensure they meet blueprints, quality standards, and exact tolerances using measuring and inspection tools.
• Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of settings or programmed control data, processing steel pieces weighing up to 300 lbs.
• Consult with engineers, production management, programmers, or others to resolve machining or programming problems.
• Operate multiple types of machine tools (e.g., grinders, drill presses, lathes) for moderately complex machining operations.
• Read job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements; perform adjustments and obtain correct materials.
• Set up and lay out work according to print specifications.
• Observe machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction; measure dimensions to verify accuracy.
• Remove burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpieces; adjust stops and replace dull tools.
• Perform minor machine maintenance, such as oiling machines, dies, or workpieces.
• Stack, mark, pack, and transport finished workpieces.
• Complete related paperwork to maintain accurate manufacturing records.
• Maintain and use all appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Use material handling equipment as required.
• Actively participate in accident prevention and adhere to all safety requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); formal technical training credits in a recognized college-level program.
• 2+ years of experience in heavy equipment production line CNC/Manual machining.
• Ability to maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with diverse personalities, including customers, vendors, co-workers, and management.
• Skill in working efficiently and accurately to meet production requirements.
• Safe material handling skills, particularly with steel.
• Capacity to learn quickly, as machined parts are unique to manufactured equipment and change orders are frequent.
• Flexibility and adaptability in coping with pressures, deadlines, and rapidly changing situations.

Work Environment

The role operates in a shop manufacturing environment with exposures to moving mechanical parts, machinery, tools, equipment, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, motorized vehicles, welding and machining operations, and outside weather conditions. There is a risk of electric shock, occasional exposure to dirt, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures. The noise level in the shop can be very loud, requiring hearing protection.
