About the Role
Installs, modifies, moves, troubleshoots, repairs, and dismantles machinery and equipment according to requisition documentation, layout plans, blueprints, or other drawings. Prepares installation site by constructing foundations and aligns and fastens machinery to the foundation using hoists, dollies, rollers, trucks, tools, squares, rules, and micrometers. Performs operational tests on newly installed, modified, repaired, and moved machinery and equipment to ensure that it meets technical specifications. Fabricates metal parts for prototype equipment based on drawings. Programs PLCs (programmable logic controllers).
This role acquires basic skills to perform routine tasks, develops understanding in analytical or scientific methods or operational processes, and works with close supervision while performing manual tasks according to established procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assists with the installation, operation, testing, and adjustment of various types of conventional or automatic machines used to produce precision parts and instruments.
- Fabricates and modifies parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
- Machines parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
- Measures, examines, and tests completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
Requirements
- Attending a Vocational / Technical School or internal training program OR equivalent combination of relevant education and experience or skillset; no prior experience needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Vocational/Technical Training Degree.
- Discipline/Major: Technical training preferred.
- Mathematical skills.
- Technical expertise.
- Manual dexterity.
- Physical stamina.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Leadership skills.
Physical Requirements
- Requires regular movement throughout GD-OTS facilities.
- Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds.
- May need to stand for long periods of time.
- Work may require employee to work inside and outside with exposure to changing climate and/or operate machinery.
- May be requested to work a different shift.
- Must be willing to work outside normal business hours as required.
- This position is Safety-Sensitive.
