Machinist (Engineering Technician III)

About the role

Bowhead is seeking a Machinist to join the Machine Shop team at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) in Virginia. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to critical national defense projects through the development of prototypes and short-run production work.

Responsibilities

• Program, set up, and machine parts according to DoD specifications and models.
• Work with a variety of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, plastic, Inconel, and titanium.
• Operate CNC lathes and mills, set tools in machines, and create fixtures for uniquely shaped parts/components.
• Comply with DoD drawings and maintain tight tolerances on machined parts.
• Occasionally use manual lathes and mills, and use standard measuring tools like dial calipers and micrometers to inspect parts.
• Assist colleagues with programming or machining techniques as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience operating CNC milling machines and lathes.
• High school diploma.
• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software.
• Basic skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
• Ability to use precision measuring tools like dial calipers and micrometers.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Able to lift up to 75 pounds, stand and walk for prolonged periods, twist, bend, and squat periodically.

• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment.

Security Clearance

Security clearance required: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level clearance. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location. Acquiring a clearance will be done with the assistance of Bowhead upon hiring unless the candidate already possesses a clearance.
