About the role

A Graduate Practical Nurse is responsible for delivering direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. They work directly with the RN to implement and evaluate a patient's care plan and report any changes to the RN.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers direct and indirect patient care in accordance with state regulations and hospital policies.
  • Assists the RN in collecting patient health data and implementing a care plan.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan and reports any changes to the RN.
  • Communicates with patients and families to provide education and support.
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and reports changes in patient conditions.
  • Delegates tasks appropriately and ensures accountability for actions taken.
  • Provides patient safety training and minimizes the use of restraints.
  • Assumes appropriate roles during code situations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle complex and controversial topics effectively.
  • Current licensure to practice as a Graduate Practical Nurse in Pennsylvania.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 clearances.
  • Successfully completes the nursing licensure exam within six months of graduation.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
  • Ability to adapt to changing patient needs.

Schedule

Shifts are rotated based on operational needs and may include rotating shifts, standby, on-call, and overtime. Travel between Independence Health locations may be required.
