Lower School Homeroom Teacher
About the role
Portledge School was founded in 1965 and is located on the beautiful North Shore of Long Island. Approximately fifty minutes (28 miles) from NYC by train, Portledge is nestled on a pastoral 63-acre tree-lined campus that is known for its cherry blossoms in spring. Enrolling approximately 500 students in grades N-12, Portledge offers a competitive college preparatory program in a warm, inclusive community. We seek to inspire our students to realize their individual potential by developing critical thinking skills and moral courage necessary for lifelong learning in an increasingly complex world. Responsibilities
- Actively evaluate and develop the Lower School curriculum
- Build positive relationships with students and families
- Participate collegially in meetings
- Take an active role in the life of the school community
- Deliver consistent high-quality instruction, mentoring, and teaching to students
- Participate in collaborative planning and ongoing professional development and a professional learning community
- Stay current with current educational research and pedagogy related to classroom instruction and educational trends
- Maintain online Atlas curriculum database for courses taught
- Attend a minimum of 4-6 evening/weekend programs that support the community throughout the year
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree minimum; advanced degree preferred in relevant area(s)
- Teaching certification required for all elementary teaching positions
- Superb written and oral communication as well as organizational and time management skills
- Belief in the value of all types of diversity, equity, and an inclusive, positive, and student-centered environment
- A commitment to the qualities embodied by the Portledge pillars: Kindness, Honor, Purpose, Respect
- A desire to nurture the whole child and support students by attending all-school events, including art, music, theater, athletics, and community functions
- A commitment to the emotional learning of children
- A commitment to excellence and to professional and personal growth
- Experience with the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) preferred but not required
- Knowledge of Google Suite and Blackbaud
- The ability to develop trusting, supportive relationships with students
Pay
$65,000 - $80,000 per year
