About the role
The School Nurse at Sanford High School and Regional Technical Center will be responsible for providing comprehensive health care services to students during the specified period.
Responsibilities
- Provides health assessments
- Develops and implements health plans
- Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual student needs
- Participates on the child educational evaluation team to evaluate the health component of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- Manages care for students with chronic health conditions, including medication administration
- Participates in home visits to assess family needs related to a student’s health; acts as a liaison between school, home, and community
- Develops procedures and provides crisis intervention for acute illness, injury, and emotional disturbances
- Promotes and assists in controlling communicable diseases through preventative immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases
- Coordinates school and community health activities and serves as a liaison between school, home, and community
- Affords information on health and promotes health careers
- Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices
- Maintains and updates cumulative health records
- Helps develop/review school health policies, procedures, standing orders, and implements the school medication policy and procedures
- Prepares the budget for school health supplies
- Organizes, instructs, and supervises school health volunteers or assistants
- Reports regularly to the principal and superintendent on school health activities as needed
- Prepares statistical reports for the Department of Education and the Department of Health & Human Services as required
- Interprets school health services for school personnel
- Interprets appraisal findings and helps students and parents accept responsibility for diagnosis and treatment
- Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Department of Health & Human Services
- Helps school personnel recognize departures from appropriate behavior and growth patterns; helps students and staff adjust student programs when necessary to accommodate health needs of students
Requirements
- RN (Registered Nurse) with a current license from the Maine State Board of Nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Three years of nursing experience, with some school nursing experience preferred
- Evidence of ability to provide health-related educational leadership and administer educational, preventative, and remedial health care programs
