Substitute School Nurse

Role Description

The Substitute School Nurse provides short-term and intermittent nursing coverage for schools within Lexington Public Schools, ensuring consistent, quality health care for students during staff absences. This is an on-site role located in Lexington, MA, and substitutes may be assigned to different school buildings as needed.

• Assessing student health concerns
• Providing first aid and emergency care
• Administering medications per district policy
• Managing health needs of students with chronic conditions
• Documenting health visits
• Maintaining confidentiality
• Communicating with caregivers, school staff, and administrators about student health and safety
• Supporting health education
• Following state and district health guidelines
• Helping uphold a safe school environment

Qualifications

• Demonstrated School Nursing and School Health experience, with an understanding of the role of health services in an educational setting
• Strong Nursing and Medicine knowledge, including assessment, intervention, and safe medication administration practices
• Experience or training in Pediatrics, with the ability to care for children and adolescents across a range of health needs
• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts; School Nurse certification or eligibility preferred
• Knowledge of state and local school health regulations, immunization requirements, and infection control practices
• Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies and to prioritize multiple student needs
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, families, educators, and administrators
• Commitment to equity, confidentiality, and respectful, culturally responsive care for all students
