Role Description
The Substitute School Nurse provides short-term and intermittent nursing coverage for schools within Lexington Public Schools, ensuring consistent, quality health care for students during staff absences. This is an on-site role located in Lexington, MA, and substitutes may be assigned to different school buildings as needed.
- Assessing student health concerns
- Providing first aid and emergency care
- Administering medications per district policy
- Managing health needs of students with chronic conditions
- Documenting health visits
- Maintaining confidentiality
- Communicating with caregivers, school staff, and administrators about student health and safety
- Supporting health education
- Following state and district health guidelines
- Helping uphold a safe school environment
Qualifications
- Demonstrated School Nursing and School Health experience, with an understanding of the role of health services in an educational setting
- Strong Nursing and Medicine knowledge, including assessment, intervention, and safe medication administration practices
- Experience or training in Pediatrics, with the ability to care for children and adolescents across a range of health needs
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Massachusetts; School Nurse certification or eligibility preferred
- Knowledge of state and local school health regulations, immunization requirements, and infection control practices
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies and to prioritize multiple student needs
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, families, educators, and administrators
- Commitment to equity, confidentiality, and respectful, culturally responsive care for all students
