Long Term Substitute- Grade 3 Teacher, West Bristol

Bristol Public Schools has partnered with ESS to manage our substitute program. A leader in K-12 staffing, ESS handles hiring, training, and placement of daily and long-term substitute teachers and paraprofessionals.

About the role

Perform regular class plans and assigned duties when the teacher is absent. This position currently includes teaching both Spanish and Italian, but the district is flexible and can adjust course assignments based on the selected candidate's certification and areas of expertise.

Anticipated start for the 2026–2027 school year through January 4, 2027 (subject to change).

Responsibilities

• Assume all instructional responsibilities for the class when the teacher is absent.
• Perform non-instructional duties assigned by the absent teacher.
• Prepare lesson plans when none are provided.
• Maintain records: check tests and quizzes, record grades, and complete all required clerical work.
• Supervise classroom, students, volunteers, and parent helpers.
• Carry out general supervisory duties as scheduled.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (Associate degree or two years of college may be acceptable in some situations).
• Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate is desirable.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional materials, write reports, and present information effectively.
• Basic mathematical skills, including calculations of rates, ratios, percentages, and basic algebra/geometry.
• Basic computer skills for email, word processing, databases, and presentations.
• Ability to solve practical problems in situations with limited standardization.
• Apply current teaching research to instructional programs and plan lessons based on school objectives and student needs.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents.
• Awareness of district requirements, Board of Education policies, and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.

Physical demands

• Frequently stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit; occasionally lift up to 50 pounds (e.g., boxes of books, AV/VCR carts).
• Direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of students.
• Close vision required to read handwritten or typed material; ability to adjust focus.
• Meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff.

Work environment

• Moderate to loud noise levels.
• Duties performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
