About the Role
The long-term substitute teacher ensures all students have equal instructional opportunities and creates a classroom environment where teaching and learning are challenging, dynamic, and comprehensive. The role is grounded in the understanding that the aim of education is personal growth, the development of individual talents and values, the acquisition of knowledge, and the pursuit of understanding.
Responsibilities
- Provide for instructional needs and interests of students with effective daily lesson planning.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, utilizing classroom time effectively.
- Demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques and use instructional resources to implement approved curriculum.
- Use evaluation to promote student growth intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally.
- Demonstrate fair, firm, and consistent behavior toward students and promote self-discipline.
- Communicate effectively and maintain positive interpersonal relations with students, parents, staff, and the community.
- Guide the learning process toward achieving school system goals and objectives by following school board policies and administrative procedures.
- Assist administration and staff in reaching the school’s mission by applying ethical standards in professional relationships.
- Maintain and improve professional competencies.
- Supervise students in various school settings.
- Maintain appropriate records.
- Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Ensure regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal.
Requirements
- An Associate’s degree or 60 college credits.
- Knowledge and use of culturally responsive practices.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Capability to perform essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to speak clearly and audibly in conversations, on the telephone, and when addressing groups.
- Ability to travel to school and other local locations, sometimes with little notice.
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
- Ability to sit for long hours.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms.
- Sufficient manual dexterity to handle objects and use office technology.
- Sufficient mobility to move about the work area.
- Sufficient vision to read printed materials, see distant objects clearly, and identify objects.
- Sufficient hearing to comprehend conversations in person and on the telephone, and distinguish sounds up to twenty feet.
- Occasionally climb or balance.
- Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Occasionally lift up to fifteen pounds.
Work Environment
- Moderate noise (e.g., classroom/office environment with computers, printers, and telephones; regular conversations; meetings in small or large groups).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- MSDE-issued professional teacher certificate with appropriate content endorsement.
- Bilingual (Spanish).
- Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.
