About the role

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is seeking a Long-term Intern to join our Engineering Department based in Wichita, KS. The intern will support aircraft structural design engineering activities, including design, static analysis, and fatigue and damage tolerance analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Support aircraft structural design engineering activities.
  • Perform various design engineering activities to support production of aircraft or in-service aircraft.
  • Assignments may include detail part modeling, detail part sizing, layout maturation, trade study analysis, weight reduction efforts, certification activity, or in-service support.
  • Document data in support of trade studies for airframe structure.
  • Develop solutions to simple/routine technical problems of limited scope.
  • Apply technical principles and follow detailed instructions.
  • Communicate issues, solutions, ideas, and status of current work to supervision.
  • Learn and use tool sets effectively.

Requirements

  • Must be currently located and attending school in the Wichita, KS metro area.
  • Current student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace/Mechanical/Civil Engineering degree.
  • Desired curriculum exposure in airframe design, static analysis, mechanics of materials, and/or a CAD application.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, G-Suite is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
  • Ability to interpret and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and bill of material systems.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and accessible.
  • Knowledge of maintenance repair shop practices, equipment, and capabilities.
  • A strong computer background, including MS Office application experience (Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point) and Google Suite application experience (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail).
  • Interpersonal abilities to effectively work with all levels of personnel and fields.
  • Able to communicate in English (verbal and written).

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Minor in Computer Science.
  • Previous Airbus experience in engineering.
  • Airframe design, MRB, CATIA, Isami, NASTRAN, and PATRAN experience preferred.

Skills

  • Basic knowledge of classical and numerical (Finite Element) stress analysis methods.
  • Basic understanding of design principles.
  • Technical writing skills.
  • MS Office and Google Suite proficiency.
  • Teamwork and communication skills.
  • Interpretation and following of technical procedures.
  • Reading and understanding of engineering drawings and bill of material systems.
  • Computer background and experience with MS Office and Google Suite.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work with all levels of personnel.
  • Strong English language skills (verbal and written).

Pay

Schedule

Full-time onsite unless otherwise approved by management and human resources.

Physical Requirements

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings; daily.
  • Hearing: able to hear in order to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear safety warnings or alarms; daily.
  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications; daily.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment; daily.
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs; once a month.
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs; once a month.
  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools; once a month.
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer; daily.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.
  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices; daily.
  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces; daily.
  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Respirators/Masks, and/or Protective Gloves as required by site and/or customer site.
  • Administrative position only PPE required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the shop floor.
