About the role

The Litigation Paralegal will be part of Kilpatrick's Trademark Department, supporting attorneys in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, San Diego, Los Angeles, Walnut Creek, or Seattle offices. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in managing complex litigation cases, from discovery to trial and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Implement case management tools like Relativity, Everchron, Westlaw Case Notebook, Case Map, and Time Map.
  • Manage and maintain all file documents, including indexing and overseeing their maintenance.
  • Initiate and maintain docketing within the Firm’s CompuLaw system and monitor trial calendars.
  • Assist attorneys in TTAB inter partes proceedings, including drafting Notices of Opposition, Petitions to Cancel, Answers, Amended Pleadings, Counterclaims, Affirmative Defenses, and Rule 11/Rule 15 related support.
  • Manage service and proof of service requirements, maintaining TTABVUE record copies and internal file alignment.
  • Draft and file routine consent motions, extensions of time, suspension motions, and stipulations.
  • Draft pleadings and discovery documents, including subpoenas, notices of deposition, and templates for discovery responses.
  • Prepare and conduct depositions, manage document production processes, and prepare outlines and exhibits.
  • Prepare pre-trial orders and update interim status reports to clients.
  • Coordinate litigation support resources and assist in trial preparations, including exhibit logs and war room setups.
  • Conduct legal and other research using tools like Westlaw, cite check documents, and capture social media content for litigation purposes.
  • Enforce trademark investigations of newly filed USPTO trademark applications and unlawful/common law trademark uses.

Requirements

  • California residents must have a Bachelor’s degree and/or paralegal certificate, with a Certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred.
  • Outside California candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree and/or paralegal certificate, with a minimum of 5- years of relevant work experience in a professional environment, including progressive management of litigation matters.
  • Experience in a law firm setting is required.
  • Proficiency with electronic research tools like Westlaw is essential.
  • High level of proficiency with technology, including Microsoft Office Suite applications, Adobe Acrobat, Litigation Support Applications, and Pacer.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of California Business & Professions Code 6450 et seq. and ability to satisfy its requirements.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Confidentiality and respect for others.

Skills

  • Proficiency with electronic research tools like Westlaw.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
