About the role

Employee will perform work requiring an intermediate degree of skill and assist other linemen in the construction, repair, and maintenance of electric distribution and transmission lines.

Responsibilities

General Duties

  • Be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures, and practices.
  • Assist and/or direct the training of other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Line Technician "B" and all lower classifications within the subject line of progression or other duties with which the employee is familiar.
  • Report to assigned locations for training as directed and actively participate in training activities.
  • Exhibit adequate competency in activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections, demonstrated via performance of job duties and training/testing programs administered at prescribed intervals.
  • Watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury.
  • Perform duties of lower or higher classifications incidental to the job and within capabilities, including those needed for training in higher classifications.
  • Keep all equipment, tools, materials, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.
  • Perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment.
  • Represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance, and attitude.

Specific Duties

  • Perform all the duties of a Line Technician "C".
  • Climb all poles, towers, and other structures.
  • Set up and operate wire stringing equipment, including installation and removal of stringing blocks, sheaves, etc., for all types of conductors and configurations used on the system.
  • Relocate and rearrange conductors, buss work, and other energized connections to provide adequate clearances for the installation of new conductors or devices.
  • Install and remove line-hose, blankets, and other rubber goods used for cover-up work on energized conductors.
  • Develop a working knowledge of blueprint reading pertaining to line construction or removal.
  • Install, remove, and maintain cross arms, braces, pins, insulators, secondary racks, brackets, guys, grounds, ground wire, and associated line hardware.
  • Perform duties from aerial lifts, derricks, poles, towers, and other elevated structures.
  • Terminate primary and secondary conductors used in the transformation of voltages within the distribution system.
  • Work with energized conductors and equipment.
  • Transmit and relay messages and instructions via two-way radio.
  • Install and remove conductors, including "tying in", "clipping in" or clamping in conductors using tie wires, suspension and support clamps, armor rods, and installation/removal of dampers and similar devices.
  • Respond to a minimum of 50% of call-ins for off-hour trouble response to gain exposure to various field conditions and competencies required for advancement.

Requirements

General Qualifications

  • Meet all general qualifications of employment.
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work.
  • Thorough familiarity with Company Safety Rules and willingness to enforce them.
  • Possess a valid state driver's license and pass the Transportation Department's driver's test for operating Company vehicles, including those with manual transmissions.
  • Willingness to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.
  • Good health and ability to perform the physical requirements of the job, including work at heights and heavy manual labor.
  • Willingness and ability to acquire necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher classifications.
  • Ability to communicate through both verbal and written reports.
  • Ability to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry through work assignments and encourage cooperation and satisfactory work from others.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing duties associated with lower classification(s) within the line of progression.
  • Ability to lead, direct, and train other employees to obtain satisfactory work results.
  • Rated qualified for entry into this classification under the Louisville Gas and Electric Company's Employee Performance Review Program and have satisfactorily completed all applicable training and testing programs.

Specific Qualifications

  • Meet and be proficient in all qualifications of Line Technician "C".
  • At least twelve (12) months experience as a Line Technician "C" or equivalent, with successful completion of all required training and testing programs in that classification.
  • Ability to identify, by visual observation, characteristics of construction and equipment used, and the various voltage levels on the system.
  • General knowledge of the character and layout of the electrical distribution circuits on the system.
  • Ability to distinguish between energized and de-energized conductors.
  • Ability to perform duties from aerial lifts, derricks, poles, towers, and other elevated structures.
