Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

About the role

The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is responsible for enforcing pool rules and regulations to ensure the safety and supervision of all swimmers, participants, equipment, and the overall facility. They will be heavily involved with the general public, and will assist in many facets of overall pool operation. Amherst Recreation Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching various levels of swimming to children and adults. Swim Instructors are also responsible for the supervision of the participants in their designated learning groups. Instructors will be involved with interacting with the general public, and may be asked to assist in various facets of overall instruction program. Instructors will develop lesson plans and act as the lead teacher and/or assist with swim lessons as assigned by the Aquatics Program Coordinator.

Responsibilities

• Teach and/or assist with swim lessons.
• Ensure the safety and supervision of participants, equipment, and facility by enforcing pool and departmental rules and regulations.
• Perform daily checks of safety equipment to ensure it is in the correct place and in good working order.
• Assist with regularly scheduled cleaning of pool area, locker rooms, and surrounding areas.
• Provide courteous, professional assistance to the public; wear designated staff uniform.
• Assist with special events as needed; attend mandatory staff meetings and in-service trainings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Must be 15+ years of age or older.
• Possess current Red Cross (or equivalent) certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED, and First Aid.
• Successfully pass the Town’s water safety skill test.
• Successfully pass Criminal Offender Registry Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks.

Qualifications

• WSI certification.
• Previous experience working at a pool or beach.
• Previous experience teaching swimming lessons.

Schedule

10‑15 hours per week.
