Lieutenant - EHSO (#012000) Perry Correctional Institution, Pelzer (GREENVILLE) Level 3

About the role

This position ensures the institution's safety program, buildings, employee and inmate functions, and public property are managed to maintain a safe environment. It provides guidance and consultation to institutional personnel, including security, to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and programs relevant to an effective environmental health and safety program.

Responsibilities

• Instruct and train staff and inmates, and conduct inspections to ensure safe performance of duties and post procedures.
• Direct and supervise an inspection program to detect and correct shortcomings in building contents, grounds, security, vehicles, sanitation, and maintenance.
• Investigate reported hazards, accidents, fires, and other incidents impacting the health, welfare, and safety of employees and inmates.
• Ensure control and proper use of all hazardous and toxic materials in compliance with policy.
• Successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• A high school diploma.
• Three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for supervisory experience (associate degree and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

State of South Carolina minimum: A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for required experience.
