Sergeant (#014521) Perry Correctional Institution, Pelzer (GREENVILLE) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates, and directs the actions of security staff.
• Oversees security, custody, and control of inmates in assigned units.
• Assumes primary responsibility for the security of all buildings and public property.
• Conducts routine checks of units to ensure subordinate staff perform duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates inmate complaints and violations.
• Arbitrates disputes among the inmate population and correctional staff.
• Successfully completes eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Eighteen (18) months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy.
• Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
