Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)

The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) provides life-saving care and relieves suffering for animal victims of cruelty and neglect through internal partners (ASPCA adoption center, kitten nursery, and community advocate team) and external partners (NYPD and other NYC organizations). Additionally, AAH offers subsidized care for animals whose owners face financial challenges. Licensed Veterinary Technicians at AAH are passionate, level-headed nurses committed to animals living good lives, excelling in a fast-paced environment while collaborating with the veterinary medical team to deliver high-quality, compassionate care.

Responsibilities

• Nursing Care and Client Services (40%)
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of veterinary medical concepts.
  • Provide compassionate, quality patient care using Fear Free Guidelines.
  • Perform technical nursing skills: venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, multi-tasking, and ability to prioritize based on hospital and patient needs.
  • Handle and restrain animals for medical procedures.
  • Treat animals and clients with care and respect; explain medical conditions to clients.
  • Document and communicate patient concerns or changes to veterinarians.
  • Feed and medicate patients as instructed.
  • Lift patients up to 40 pounds.
  • Use low-stress handling techniques to ensure safety and compassion.
• Professionalism, Communication, and Performance (40%)
  • Represent ASPCA professionally and courteously.
  • Provide feedback to management on training needs, staffing, and hospital improvements.
  • Collaborate with other ASPCA departments and staff.
  • Support and adhere to organizational and departmental policies.
  • Maintain knowledge of AAH daily procedures and protocols.
  • Uphold high standards of care, work ethic, and performance.
  • Work independently and as part of a team under challenging conditions.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Report unsafe conditions or safety rule infractions to supervisors.
• Housekeeping and Maintenance (20%)
  • Clean and disinfect kennels, equipment, and facilities using appropriate PPE.
  • Follow OSHA and departmental PPE and cleaning protocols.
  • Adhere to written and verbal Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitor, inventory, and restock supplies as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness in treatment, surgery, exam rooms, and kennels throughout the day.

Qualifications

• Able to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for 10+ hours.
• Basic to advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office and ImproMed.
• Completion of Fear Free 8-module course or willingness to complete within 60 days of hire.
• High degree of integrity and accountability.
• Knowledge of shelter medicine, veterinary hospital protocols, and procedures.
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work in a team or independently with flexibility and enthusiasm.
• Strong Fear Free animal handling and restraint skills.
• Proficiency in ImproMed preferred.
• Licensed Veterinary Technician (American Association of Veterinary State Boards).
• Shelter medicine or veterinary technician experience.

Language: English (required), Spanish (preferred).

Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology.

Pay

The target hiring range for this role is $34.60 - $37.00 per hour. Starting pay depends on education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, and market demands. Additional benefits include a signing bonus, relocation bonus (for qualifying candidates), and eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Schedule

Wednesday–Saturday, 10:00 AM–8:00 PM. Occasional flexibility and overtime may be required.
