The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) provides life-saving care and relieves suffering for animal victims of cruelty and neglect through internal partners (ASPCA adoption center, kitten nursery, and community advocate team) and external partners (NYPD and other NYC organizations). Additionally, AAH offers subsidized care for animals whose owners face financial challenges. Licensed Veterinary Technicians at AAH are passionate, level-headed nurses committed to animals living good lives, excelling in a fast-paced environment while collaborating with the veterinary medical team to deliver high-quality, compassionate care.
Responsibilities
- Nursing Care and Client Services (40%)
- Possess in-depth knowledge of veterinary medical concepts.
- Provide compassionate, quality patient care utilizing Fear Free Guidelines.
- Perform technical nursing skills, including venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.
- Demonstrate critical thinking, multi-tasking, and ability to prioritize based on hospital and patient needs.
- Handle and restrain animals for various medical procedures.
- Treat animals and clients with care and respect; explain medical conditions to clients as documented by the veterinarian.
- Document and communicate patient concerns or observed changes to the veterinarian.
- Feed and medicate patients following veterinarian and LVT instructions.
- Lift patients up to 40 pounds.
- Use low-stress handling techniques to ensure a safe, compassionate environment for animals, staff, and clients.
- Professionalism, Communication, and Performance (40%)
- Represent the ASPCA in a professional and courteous manner.
- Provide management with feedback about training needs, new hires, coworkers, interns, and hospital needs.
- Collaborate professionally with other ASPCA department managers and staff.
- Support and adhere to organizational and departmental policies and protocols.
- Maintain an open mind regarding changes; learn, implement, and teach new protocols.
- Possess thorough knowledge of AAH daily procedures and protocols.
- Ensure and maintain high standards of care, work ethic, and performance.
- Work independently and as part of a team efficiently under challenging conditions.
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions.
- Advise supervisors of unsafe conditions, including unrecognized hazards or safety rule infractions.
- Housekeeping and Maintenance (20%)
- Clean and disinfect kennels, equipment, and facility using appropriate PPE.
- Follow departmental PPE and cleaning protocols, as well as OSHA standards.
- Adhere to written and verbally communicated Standard Operating Procedures.
- Take inventory, stock supplies, and note when supplies are running low.
- Maintain cleanliness in treatment, surgery, exam rooms, and kennels throughout the day.
Requirements
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Able to work standing for 10 or more hours.
- Basic to advanced computer skills, including Excel, Microsoft Office, and ImproMed.
- Completion of the Fear Free 8-module course or willingness to complete within 60 days of hire.
- High degree of integrity and accountability.
- Knowledge of shelter medicine and operations, as well as veterinary hospital protocols.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal communication and ability to work in a team or independently.
- Sense of humor, flexibility, enthusiasm, and attention to detail.
- Excellent Fear Free animal handling and restraint skills.
- Proficiency in ImproMed preferred.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (American Association of Veterinary State Boards).
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology.
- Experience in veterinary technology or shelter medicine.
