This position provides direct nursing care and support to the patients of the SIU Center for Family Medicine-Jacksonville clinic. Time is spent assisting providers in the clinic with face-to-face patient contact and phone triage. This position must work closely with faculty, staff, and patients to ensure an efficient operation.

Responsibilities

  • Floor Nursing (40%)
    • Assists faculty in direct patient care, including diagnostic and treatment procedures.
    • Provides nursing care requiring nursing judgment and specialized skills, documenting all care in the electronic health record.
    • Sees patients in nurse-only clinics under direct physician supervision for protocol-driven care (e.g., blood sugar checks, blood pressure checks) and documents care in the electronic health record.
    • Ensures providers' rooms remain full and assists with electronic health record desktop reports and paper reports (e.g., labs, x-rays, consultation results).
    • Coordinates referrals with hospitals and specialists, ensuring accurate continuum of care and documenting actions in the electronic health record.
    • Coordinates patient and family education prior to diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
    • Administers and records prescribed medications and immunizations (IM, subcutaneous, intradermal, oral) and refills prescriptions under physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner orders via the electronic health record.
    • Maintains clean, well-equipped, and supplied exam rooms; assembles clean and sterile packs for special procedures; and ensures equipment is clean and sterile.
  • Phone Triage (55%)
    • Screens telephone calls from patients, evaluating the need for physician or healthcare team intervention using the electronic health record for background information.
    • Handles triage and medical advice calls, assessing urgency and implementing appropriate plans under physician protocols or nursing standards, documenting actions in the electronic health record.
    • Makes judgment decisions on same-day visit necessity and coordinates scheduling with providers via the electronic health record.
    • Manages prescription refills and non-urgent calls, updating and documenting actions in the electronic health record.
    • Provides health care information to patients/families for acute or episodic minor illnesses according to faculty-developed protocols, recording information in the electronic health record.
    • Communicates diagnostic study results to patients after physician review.
  • Teaching/Training (5%)
    • Provides training to clinical patient care staff as requested.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Six months of nursing experience in a healthcare facility (e.g., hospital, nursing home, medical clinic, prison, mental health facility, or closely related facilities).
