Join the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as a License Examiner II in the Greenville, SC branch office. Responsibilities
- Administer road test examinations for all vehicle classes:
- Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001+ pounds, provided the GVWR of the towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds.
- Class B: Any single unit vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001+ pounds, or any such vehicle towing up to 10,000 pounds.
- Class C: Vehicles designed to transport 16+ passengers (including the driver) or placarded for hazardous materials, not meeting Class A or B definitions.
- Class D: Passenger and non-commercial vehicles not exceeding 26,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class E: Non-commercial single unit vehicles not exceeding 26,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class F: Non-commercial combination vehicles exceeding 26,000 pounds GVWR.
- Class M: Motorcycles and CDLs (if in a CDL office).
- Determine applicants' physical and mental fitness to safely operate motor vehicles.
- Administer written, oral, and automated examinations on laws and driving procedures.
- Perform pre-trip inspections of applicant-operated vehicles.
- Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print documents for issuing driver licenses, beginner permits, ID cards, vehicle registrations, license plates, permits, and titles (including repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, and rebuilt vehicles).
- Edit customer name and address fields in records.
- Process motor vehicle registration requests and research suspension inquiries.
- Modify driver International Registration Plan credentials and issue automobile dealership licenses.
- Answer customer inquiries about driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements via phone or in person.
- Greet and direct customers to appropriate office areas.
- Collect fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund.
- Reconcile and prepare daily reports and refund request documents.
- Compute vehicle sales taxes and adjust vehicle record weights.
- Receive, code, and issue receipts for surrendered license plates; box plates and complete pickup requests.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Fax, mail documents, and run errands (e.g., post office, bank deposits).
Working Conditions
- Conduct road tests year-round in various weather conditions (rain, wind, heat, cold).
- Testing hours span early morning to early evening.
- Work requires prolonged sitting/standing, walking, and constant talking.
- Exposure to outdoor temperatures and processing chemicals for driver’s licenses.
- May require relocation to an office within 30 miles of the home office if business needs arise.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license and at least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
- Completion of a nationwide criminal background check, including fingerprinting.
- Certification to administer CDL knowledge/skill tests requires completing a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination.
- Ability to communicate professionally with internal and external customers.
- Excellent customer service skills and thorough knowledge of driver licensing eligibility requirements.
