Library Office Assistant II / RECAP (Shelving Facility Assistant)
ReCAP is a partnership of Princeton University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Yale University, and The New York Public Library. The facility encompasses eight shelving modules, two cold storage film vaults, and a 25,000 square foot processing center on Princeton’s Forrestal Campus in Plainsboro, NJ. With over 18 million items, ReCAP is the largest preservation repository in North America under one roof, adding more than 450,000 items annually and fulfilling over 200,000 physical and 20,000 scan requests per year.
About the role
The Shelving Facility Assistant is a dependable and energetic team member who helps process and maintain library materials in ReCAP’s high-density shelving facility. Duties revolve around two core functions: accessioning incoming library material into permanent storage and circulating items held at the facility upon request. The role rotates daily among various tasks.
Responsibilities
- Accession new items
- Unpack delivered material from truck
- Assemble and label cardboard book trays
- Sort material by library, type, and size into appropriate trays
- Accession and verify material by scanning barcodes into the inventory management system (IMS)
- Shelve trayed and non-trayed material in the high-density shelving modules
- Circulate items
- Use IMS to process item and scan requests of stored materials
- Create work orders, retrieve items using automated lift, sort by library destination, and verify material is shipped to the proper location
- Check material back into the facility using the IMS upon return
- Scan in items to update status, sort by storage location, and reshelve material using handheld scanners and automated lift
- Document Delivery/EDD fulfillment
- Interpret and fulfill document delivery requests after retrieval
- Identify chapter, section, or page sequence to be processed using instructions provided by requestor or library
- Digitize pages using flatbed, overhead, or microfilm scanners
- Transmit the request to the requestor’s email address via scan software
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED with 1–3 years of related work experience
- General knowledge of basic computer operation and accurate keyboarding skills
- Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent attendance and punctuality
- Ability to work a schedule that may rotate to accommodate work demands
- Ability to work independently and in team environments with rotating tasks
- Ability to regularly lift heavy loads of 40 lbs. and up to 60 lbs. on occasion
- Ability to perform strenuous and repetitive tasks with care and accuracy
- Comfortable occasionally working in cooler temperatures or at heights up to 30 feet
Qualifications
- Preferred:
- Documented warehouse environment or library experience
- Previous automated lift experience
- Barcode and/or document scanner experience
- The final candidate will be required to complete a pre-employment physical and become certified in the proper use of an automated lift.
Schedule
- Monday – Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Standard weekly hours: 40.00
- Eligible for overtime: Yes
Pay
Salary range: $23.53 minimum hourly rate.
