About the role
The Teen & Young Adult Services LA3 plans, schedules, and implements library programs for patrons ages 13-21, including setup and clean-up with staff assistance. This senior Library Associate role supports a robust programming schedule, provides library collection assistance, and works at a service desk to deliver excellent customer service. The position may supervise Library Associate 2s and reports to the Library Director.
Responsibilities
- Plans and presents teen and young adult programs, including technology, craft, and other classes, both in-person and as pre-recorded videos or streaming virtual events, aligned with the library’s vision and mission.
- Manages the access and use of the Cybrarium Makerspace and VR, including ordering supplies and submitting maintenance requests.
- Acts as the primary staff liaison for the Cybrarium’s Teen Advisory Group.
- Inputs planned programs into a shared tracking system and maintains accurate program statistics.
- Collaborates with the Operations Coordinator to design marketing materials for print and digital distribution.
- Provides customer service by greeting and assisting patrons, informing them of conduct rules, and enforcing those rules when necessary.
- Assists with the circulation of library materials, including shelving and pulling holds for patrons.
- Supports library opening and closing procedures.
- Adheres to legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and the custodianship of patron records.
- May coordinate volunteers/interns, assign duties, and provide necessary training.
- Presents children’s Storytime and other children’s or adult programs as directed or in the absence of the Children and Adult Specialist.
- Coordinates field trips, including confirming details, inputting data into a shared tracker, and aiding in planned activities.
- Works closely with the programming team to plan, implement, and promote programming activities, including outreach events outside the Cybrarium.
- Collaborates with other LA3 programmers to identify and bring in outside presenters.
- May delegate tasks to LA2s for smooth service desk workflow or program success with supervisor approval.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Two years of experience in library support or paraprofessional position, or an equivalent combination of library experience, relevant curriculum or program development, instruction, and presentation experience.
- Knowledge of teen literature, educational resources, and developmentally appropriate programming is preferred.
- Understands and supports the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing freedom of access as a fundamental tenet of public libraries.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently moves within the location to file and retrieve books and other items, including from high shelves.
- Lifts and pushes up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 35 pounds (e.g., heavy boxes, books, and equipment).
- Works in confined spaces and performs tasks requiring walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and climbing.
