About the role
The Public Library of Brookline is seeking a Librarian II - Collection Services to join the Collection Services department. This position involves processing and cataloging library materials, maintaining the Library’s Library of Things collection, and collaborating with the Minuteman Library Network (MLN).
Responsibilities
- Processes and catalogs library materials.
- Verifies cataloging and classifies all types of library materials for the general collection, including world languages and Library of Things.
- Attaches barcodes and branch designations to library materials.
- Develops one or more collections; evaluates patron recommendations, selects new materials, and shares this information electronically with other staff.
- Replaces older or damaged materials; determines which materials are no longer needed based on professional criteria.
- Maintains budget for collection.
- Reads professional reviews from various sources.
- Verifies that item records will be attached to the correct bibliographic records.
- Exchanges materials and information with the MLN centralized cataloging department.
- Works with MLN to ensure the library complies with network lending agreements and metadata standards.
- Prepares continuations, adds, withdraws, and transfers items which are standing orders and come annually or more frequently.
- Serves as Person in Charge as assigned.
Requirements
- Master's of Library and Information Science degree, supplemented by additional training in library technology, and two - three years of experience in library operations is required.
- Familiarity with Dewey classification, AACR, Resource Description and Access (RDA), descriptive cataloging practices, authority control, and serial control.
- Knowledge of foreign languages in Spanish, Chinese, or Russian is highly desired.
- Familiarity with Dewey classification, OCLC MARC records.
- Excellent communication skills.
