Legal Secretary
Admittance to the examination requires a valid government-issued photograph identification. Applicants who cannot present proper identification must contact the Human Resources Division before the test date. A background check may be conducted for this classification. Following an offer of employment, post-offer medical and drug screening tests may be required at County expense.
About the role
This examination will establish an eligible list for immediate and future appointments at the Kern County District Attorney's Office. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for twelve months unless otherwise specified by the Civil Service Commission.
Examination
The written exam (weight 100%) assesses knowledge of:
- Legal terminology and procedures
- Court procedures
- Office procedures, filing, and other relevant subjects
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
Requirements
- High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent, and one year of legal secretary training
- OR three years of clerical experience in a social service, criminal justice, or legal setting
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job
Qualifying work experience may include preparation of motions, subpoenas, discoveries, or calendaring.
Some positions may require possession and maintenance of a California Notary Public Commission.
