Legal Assistant (Office Automation)
About the role
This job supports Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) by providing legal assistance and office support services. The position is open to current Federal employees in the permanent competitive service, surplus and displaced DOJ employees in the local commuting area, and CTAP eligible employees.
Responsibilities
- Provide substantive assistance to attorneys for national security and export enforcement litigative matters.
- Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents, such as complaints, motions, briefs, affidavits, stipulations, proposed orders, and releases.
- Proofread and cite check legal briefs, memoranda, and other legal documents.
- Evaluate and coordinate information to establish the facts and issues of specific litigation cases.
- Assist attorneys by conducting non-complex research of litigation, statutes, regulations, and court cases.
- Manage paper and electronic documents, correspondence, briefs, witness interviews, and other documentary materials.
- Track filing, hearing, and trial dates, and schedule conferences and interviews.
- Furnish requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and general procedures of the office.
- Develop and maintain a suspense system for ongoing cases and inform AUSA of pending dates and deadlines.
Qualifications
To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as performing legal support work associated in the specialty area of law (e.g., national security, export enforcement, etc.) by preparing legal documents, verifying citations, assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation, and using software applications and legal and non-legal databases.
Skills
The position requires typing at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.
