About the role
The Legal Assistant supports prosecutors by managing case work, court requirements, and deadlines. Duties include scheduling court dates, typing and filing documents, coordinating court hearings, and maintaining communication with various stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Serves as a personal assistant for prosecutors, handling phone calls, scheduling, and typing documents.
- Prepares and composes correspondence, edits materials, and types criminal complaints and juvenile petitions.
- Enters data into PROTECT case management system and prepares writs for transportation of defendants and witnesses.
- Processes extradition forms, detainer forms, and property/money forfeitures.
- Maintains communication with law enforcement, victim/witness program, and other justice partners.
- Initiates and drafts complaints, deferred judgement agreements, and information sheets for the Domestic and Non-Domestic Fast Track Program.
- Acquires and coordinates certified legal documents, ensuring timely delivery to court.
- Notarizes documents for prosecutors and law enforcement.
- Assists with case preparation, research, and follow-up on projects and deadlines.
- Prints and distributes weekly calendars to prosecutors.
- Maintains and updates department library.
- Maintains and verifies unresolved referrals with department records.
Requirements
- Graduate from high school or GED with clerical and office training.
- At least five years of increasingly responsible secretarial experience, including two years as a legal assistant.
- Paralegal training desirable.
- Criminal Law experience preferred.
- Knowledge of and ability to use modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated skill in performing general clerical duties.
- Knowledge of and ability to use computer software and applications utilized by the department.
- Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and prioritize work effectively.
- Ability to manage large caseloads in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain accurate and complete records, and prepare clear and comprehensive reports.
- Knowledge of and ability to use business English, grammar, and spelling.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and perform mathematical calculations.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull; or otherwise move objects up to 25 pounds, understanding and utilizing proper body mechanics.
