About the Department

The Child Development Department at Humboldt is a diverse and dynamic community of learners, committed to supporting and promoting positive experiences for children and families. We offer two bachelor's degree programs, Child Development and Family Relationships and Liberal Studies Child Development Elementary Education as well as four distinct minors including: American Indian Education, Early Childhood Development, American Sign Language & Special Populations, and Family Studies. At Cal Poly Humboldt, we prepare our students to be successful by teaching critical thinking, providing hands-on learning through our child development lab, establishing effective communication skills, modeling resilience and creativity in program and policy development, and setting high standards for ethical, responsible, reflective, proactive and professional behavior by providing students with an opportunity to participate in a variety of leadership roles.

Qualifications

• Education: B.A./B.S. is required. Coursework leading to M.A. or Ph.D. in Child Development or related field is preferred.
• Experience: Successful academic or professional experience within the last five years in Child Development or related field.
• For ECE Courses: B.A./B.S. is required. M.A. or Ph.D. is preferred. ECE or EE classroom teaching or curriculum design experience within the last five years.
• Relevance of training, experience, or specialization to teaching specific courses.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness is preferred.

Salary

Dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer – Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

• Lecturer A $5,507 - $6,677
• Lecturer B $6,221 - $13,224
• Lecturer C $6,825 - $14,523

Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.

Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff, many from local area California Indian tribes. Cal Poly Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at Humboldt to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures, with resources in Special Collections at the Cal Poly Humboldt library. The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region.
