Job Summary
The Learning Strategist/Study Skills Coordinator reports to the Associate Director of Athletics for Academic Services and Student Development. The Office of Academic Services and Student Development supports varsity student-athletes and serves as a liaison to the University's academic and administrative community.
Responsibilities
- Provides intensive academic support to an assigned group of identified student-athletes from various sports (one-on-one and small group skill development).
- Assesses and evaluates students' academic needs and prescribes additional academic assistance as needed.
- Provides workshops for all student-athletes to improve study habits and skills.
- Communicates regularly with Athletic Academic Advisors, Coaching staff, and administrators about academic progress.
- Serves as Coordinator of the Study Skills Program.
- Coordinates the N’Cat Tutoring Program, including hiring, training, and supervision of the tutorial staff.
- Manages a small group learning team, reviews for examinations, and supervises individual tutoring sessions.
- Oversees the study hall program, including hiring, training, and supervision of study hall monitors and weekly reporting.
- Makes presentations to prospective student-athletes to discuss the university's philosophy regarding student-athletes and support programs.
- Liaises with AccessibleNU (ANU) on Northwestern's campus.
- Refers selected individuals for ADHD/learning disability testing as needed.
- Buils relationships across campus to promote student-athlete welfare and community integration.
- Attends athletic events to maintain knowledge of intercollegiate sports relevant to assignments.
- Aids in other projects and programs as requested.
- Supports the hiring and training of an intern for the N’Cat Tutoring Program.
- Adheres to Department and University policies and procedures, as well as NCAA, CSC, Big Ten Conference, and Northwestern University rules and regulations.
- Participates in Department and University continuing education initiatives and required certifications and trainings.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
- Experience working with students providing supplemental academic mentoring, preferably in a college/university setting.
- Effective communication skills, both one-to-one and in public speaking contexts.
- Precision and organization in writing, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of GradesFirst software is preferred.
- Knowledge of NCAA, CSC, Big Ten Conference, and Northwestern University rules and regulations preferred.
- Master’s degree strongly preferred.
