Learning Assistance or Learning Skills Coordinators or Instructors, and Tutoring Coordinators (Pool)

FLSA Status: Exempt. Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based on education and credited experience. Pending course assignment, initial placement may range as follows:

• Lab Courses (Salary Schedule AJ - Laboratory Rate): $83.09-$103.42 per hour
• Special Rate Courses (Salary Schedule AJ - Special Rate): $60.01-$75.10 per hour

Assignments are semester-based as needed. Mandated Reporter: Yes.

Responsibilities

• Assist new, first-time students in making a successful transition to college life.
• Provide relevant information and engage students in exercises that clarify academic requirements and remove common obstacles that can delay students' progress.
• Provide instruction on topics including: knowledge of resources, study techniques, writing skills, critical thinking skills, motivation, and self-efficacy.
• Utilize teaching techniques that place a strong emphasis on group work and peer learning.

Requirements

• Any master's degree or higher in a discipline where learning assistance or tutoring is provided at the employing college; OR a master's degree or higher in education, educational psychology, instructional psychology, or another master's degree or higher with emphasis in adult learning theory. (Note: Minimum qualifications do not apply to tutoring or learning assistance for which no apportionment is claimed.)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.

• Degree Equivalence: A degree with similar content to those listed, where the degree title or area of expertise differs slightly.
• Academic Background Equivalence: At least 24 semester units (or equivalent) of coursework in the academic field, plus a broad cultural education typically met by general education requirements for a Bachelor's or Associate's degree.
• Professional Achievement Equivalence: Substantial evidence of outstanding professional achievement, training, publications, portfolios, speaking engagements, or equivalent preparation, teaching, or work experience.

Skills

• Understanding of and commitment to teaching community college students.
• Experience teaching Learning Center courses.
• Experience working with diverse students, including those with limited proficiency in English.
• Ability to use and develop teaching methods that emphasize cooperation, collaboration, and student engagement.
• Preparation for or experience in designing and preparing student success plans.
• Strength in interpersonal communication.
• Ability to organize and explain materials for students with varying abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experiences.
• Acceptance of the division's commitment to established academic standards.
• Knowledge of project-based learning, learning support and student development theories, community building, peer learning, and various learning assessment tools and resources.
