About the role

A LEAPS Paraprofessional (often designated as an Afterschool Instructional Assistant or Support Specialist) works within Tennessee's Lottery for Education: Afterschool Programs (LEAPs). The core purpose of this role is to provide safe supervision and academic enrichment that complements the regular school-day curriculum. Because LEAPS is a state-grant-funded program, the job description focuses heavily on academic tutoring, positive youth development, and meticulous attendance/grant compliance tracking. Under the direct supervision of the Program Site Coordinator and school administration, the LEAPS Paraprofessional supports student success during out-of-school hours. They lead small-group activities, reinforce foundational learning targets, and ensure a safe, organized environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead targeted interventions and homework assistance in foundational subjects like reading, math, and science (small-group tutoring).
  • Implement pre-planned enrichment activities focusing on STEM, literacy development, fitness, and nutrition.
  • Adapt activities to support diverse learning needs, keeping students motivated and actively participating.
  • Actively supervise students during transitions from the regular school day to the afterschool program, including snack time, recess, and dismissal.
  • Enforce program rules consistently using positive behavior interventions (like PBIS) to reduce distractions and resolve minor conflicts.
  • Maintain a headcount and account for all students at all times, including during outdoor or recreational activities.
  • Record daily attendance, student arrival/departure times, and sign-out logs required for state grant audit reporting.
  • Assist with setting up learning environments, distributing snacks according to USDA guidelines, and cleaning up activity stations.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding student behaviors, personal records, and academic progress.

Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move dynamically for extended periods.
  • Willingness to supervise outdoor physical and wellness activities.
  • High levels of patience, empathy, and strong communication skills necessary for engaging with children and families.
