About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise is a New York City-based nonprofit organization serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. We provide consistent, high-quality programming in mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression, creating structured environments where students can grow, be seen, and build lasting skills.

Role Overview

The Leadership Development Facilitator designs and delivers engaging leadership development workshops, training sessions, and professional learning experiences for Mentor A Promise's directors, managers, team leads, volunteers, interns, and emerging leaders. This role supports the cultivation of a shared leadership philosophy grounded in servant leadership, transparency, emotional intelligence, collaboration, ethical decision-making, and continuous learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership Instruction

    • Design and facilitate engaging leadership development workshops and learning experiences
    • Teach evidence-informed leadership principles and best practices
    • Deliver training on communication, collaboration, emotional intelligence, and professional leadership
    • Facilitate interactive discussions, case studies, and leadership exercises
    • Create inclusive learning environments that encourage participation and reflection
  • Leadership Development Support

    • Grow directors, managers, team leads, volunteers, interns, and emerging leaders
    • Teach servant leadership, ethical leadership, and values-based decision-making
    • Help participants strengthen coaching, delegation, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills
    • Encourage self-awareness, adaptability, resilience, and continuous improvement
    • Promote leadership through service and collaboration
  • Curriculum Development

    • Develop leadership training materials, presentations, and facilitator guides
    • Research and incorporate evidence-based leadership practices
    • Continuously improve curriculum based on participant feedback and organizational needs
    • Create practical resources that support ongoing leadership development
  • Collaboration

    • Partner with organizational leaders to identify leadership development needs
    • Collaborate with PromisePeople, PromiseOperations, and other divisions to support professional development initiatives
    • Share instructional resources and leadership best practices
    • Support organization-wide training events and leadership initiatives
  • Continuous Improvement

    • Evaluate leadership training effectiveness
    • Recommend improvements to leadership development programming
    • Stay informed on emerging leadership research and adult learning practices
    • Contribute to building a culture of lifelong learning across Mentor A Promise

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in leadership development, adult education, organizational development, coaching, training, human resources, education, nonprofit leadership, or related fields
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and public speaking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities
  • Experience developing instructional materials or professional learning programs
  • Passion for mentoring and developing future leaders
  • Commitment to servant leadership, collaboration, and continuous learning

Volunteer Expectations

  • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
  • Minimum 6-month commitment required
  • Maintain timely and professional communication
  • Collaborate through MAP systems and communication platforms
  • Support MAP's safeguarding standards, mission, and organizational values
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, collaboration, inclusivity, and a commitment to lifelong learning
