About the role

To deliver excellent patient-centered care by ensuring the scheduling, financial, and communication process is complete for patients having major and minor operative procedures. The role involves verifying insurance coverage and benefits, obtaining prior authorizations, preparing and explaining cost estimates, identifying and collecting prepayments, providing in-depth financial counseling, establishing payment plans, and securing sponsorship for uninsured patients. You will also update demographic and financial data, maintain surgical calendars, manage OR time utilization, prioritize and post surgical cases, and coordinate special needs for each patient’s operative experience. As the key communicator, you will facilitate planning, scheduling, and education between physicians, patients, and payors to ensure a seamless process.

Responsibilities

  • Verify insurance coverage and benefits for patients undergoing operative procedures.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for services.
  • Prepare, communicate, and explain cost estimates for multiple services prior to procedures.
  • Identify and collect prepayments from patients.
  • Provide in-depth financial counseling and establish payment plans.
  • Assist uninsured patients in obtaining sponsorship.
  • Update demographic and financial data in the UF Health Physician Group system.
  • Independently maintain surgical calendars and manage utilization of scheduled OR time to maximize charges.
  • Prioritize and post surgical cases.
  • Coordinate multiple special needs for each patient’s operative experience to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Serve as the key communicator between physicians, patients, and payors to facilitate planning, scheduling, and education.
  • May be required to float to other practices or adjust work hours as needed for staffing.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Three years of business, financial, or physician practice experience (required).
  • A four-year degree may substitute for two years of financial/physician office experience.
  • An Associate’s Degree or equivalent coursework may substitute for one year of financial/physician office experience.
  • Working knowledge of CPT and ICD-9/10 diagnosis coding (required).
  • EPIC system knowledge (preferred).

Skills

  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable collecting payments and counseling patients regarding financial matters in a professional manner.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and function effectively in a team environment.
