Lead Plumber

About the role

Department: Local Maintenance Services. Provides technical guidance in training and directive activities of plumbers engaged in the installation, repair and maintenance of university plumbing systems and fixtures. Works with critical infrastructure under Texas Executive Order GA‑48, requiring ability to maintain security and integrity of university systems, including routine personnel reviews for criminal history or foreign adversary connections.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates work assignments with supervisor regarding completion, materials needed and possible utility line interruptions; coordinates work with customer, University Police, Facility Planning and other university departments.
• Administers work orders, assigns work to plumbers and ensures completion in a prompt, safe, professional manner.
• Maintains inventory of valves, piping, saddles and other plumbing equipment and supplies.
• Assists supervisor in completing required reports and conducting performance appraisals.
• Directs personnel involved in installation, repair, preventive maintenance of all plumbing aspects including fixtures, gas leaks, water leaks and sewer lines.
• Distributes work assignments.
• Interprets blueprint and construction plans (water, gas & sewer) and ensures adherence to local plumbing codes.
• Assists personnel with complex work assignments and inspects completed tasks.
• Operates pressure test equipment to test installed systems for leaks and verifies systems meet specifications.
• Delegates responsibilities among personnel based on priorities to maintain efficient operations.
• Supervises and/or coordinates work efforts with outside contractors for the University of Houston.
• Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of five (5) years of directly job‑related experience.
• Valid Texas driver’s license.
• Technical certification or licensing directly related to the job (as specified in the job description addendum).
• Ability to maintain security and integrity of university infrastructure, including routine personnel reviews for criminal history or connections to foreign adversary governments.
• Basic knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and simple mathematical functions (percentages, ratios, etc.).
• Position is security sensitive; a criminal history check will be conducted.
