Lead Phlebotomist

Schedule

• Full-Time, 40 hours/week
• Hours: Monday–Friday; variable 8-hour shifts between 7:00am–6:00pm
• Every other Saturday required: 7:00am–1:00pm
• Local travel required 25–50% of the time based on operational needs

Responsibilities

• Train, ensure compliance, and assess competency for the collection of patient samples for adult and pediatric patients via venipuncture or capillary collection using aseptic protocols, accurate patient identification, and proper labeling procedures
• Conduct routine visits of collection sites to ensure quality, compliance, and efficiency
• Assist with collection during peak volume times and as determined by operational needs
• Initiate investigations for issues and concerns, report to leadership, and participate in required education
• Serve as the first line of communication for Phlebotomy staff in day-to-day operations, including scheduling, Quality Assurance monitoring, and clinical staff support
• Perform specimen centrifugation, processing, prepping for transportation, storage, and retrieval
• Produce patient demographic sheets and prepare additional paperwork, labels, etc., to accompany specimens
• Demonstrate and explain appropriate phlebotomy techniques and procedures to obtain cooperation for specimen collection
• Assess adverse reactions (e.g., dizziness) and notify appropriate clinical staff
• Preserve patient confidentiality and ensure HIPAA compliance
• Maintain a clean patient/working environment while meeting OSHA and regulatory agency requirements for sharps and medical/biological waste disposal
• Perform CLIA-waived and some CLIA-moderate testing, as well as Bone Marrow collection assistance
• Responsible for quality control, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation
• Ensure accurate recording of test results within expected time frames
• Communicate questions, unusual findings, or observations to the Lab Manager or Supervisor
• Work directly with physicians for observation and assistance in bone marrow specimen collection and sample preparation
• Ensure patients receive a quality professional phlebotomy service and a pleasant experience at all locations, including phone interactions
• Assist in the development, assembly, and implementation of the annual phlebotomy skills and competency assessment
• Participate in educational and training activities, as well as routine administrative and non-routine technical functions within scope
• Interact with patients professionally and courteously using positive patient experience tools
• Monitor phone and voicemail messages as necessary
• Utilize skills to accurately access patient/testing information and communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff
• Appropriately maintain inventory of supplies and materials within the department
• Support RL6 investigations and reporting
• Effectively report and investigate patient safety incidents, medical errors, and potential risks
• Assist with identification and implementation of corrective actions where appropriate
• Investigate issues such as turn-around times, supply problems, and patient concerns, and forward them to the correct leadership

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Phlebotomy Certification required (within three months of hire date, before preferred) issued by one of the following:
  • AMT – American Medical Technologist
  • ASCP – American Society for Clinical Pathology
  • NCA – National Credentialing Agency
  • National Health Association (NHA)
  • National Phlebotomy Association (NPA)
• 3 years of phlebotomy experience required
• Point of Care (CLIA-waived testing) experience preferred
• CPR certification required

Pay

The compensation for this role includes a base pay range of $17.65–26.45 per hour. Actual pay is determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. Additional compensation may be available through shift differentials, bonuses, and other incentives.
