Lead Phlebotomist

About the Role

As a Lead Phlebotomist at Memorial Health University Medical Center, you will obtain blood samples, collect, transport, and process specimens in a timely manner while maintaining order in phlebotomy. You will follow established guidelines for specimen processing, including accessioning, centrifugation, and delivery to technical areas, while adhering to all safety and infection control policies. This role involves assisting with scheduling, monitoring staff productivity, performance documentation, and ongoing departmental projects.

Responsibilities

  • Determine tube type, volume, and techniques for requested tests and obtain specimens efficiently.
  • Transport specimens to the Laboratory and assist nursing services with blood collection as needed.
  • Practice error prevention by verifying patient and specimen identification prior to procedures.
  • Process specimens, including accessioning, centrifugation, labeling, and distribution, with attention to priority (STAT vs. routine).
  • Demonstrate age-appropriate care for all patients and maintain annual competency documentation.
  • Utilize the Label Bar Coding System to collect and label specimens accurately and timely.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, nurses, laboratory team members, and supervisors.
  • Review and resolve uncollected logs, consulting with team members as necessary.
  • Create and manage team member schedules for all shifts, including time edits in Kronos.
  • Oversee team member productivity and facilitate training for new phlebotomy staff.
  • Initiate disciplinary actions by gathering information and escalating to supervisors.
  • Manage supply orders and facilitate team huddles to communicate directives.
  • Assist supervisors and managers with other reasonable duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Previous management experience.
