Lead Phlebotomist
About the role
The Lead Phlebotomist at Martin County Hospital District supervises the phlebotomy staff, coordinates daily workflow, performs specific activities in the hospital and laboratory environment, and ensures compliance with laboratory policies, safety regulations, and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Supervise phlebotomy staff
- Coordinate daily workflow
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently
- Ensure compliance with laboratory policies, safety regulations, and quality standards
- Aid technical staff as needed to maintain process flow
- Verify accuracy of specimen/patient identifiers and ensure correct tube type for tests
- Set up waived testing, record results, and report normal interfaced results
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain clean benches and work areas
- Assist with inventory and phlebotomy supply ordering
- Inspect and receive new supplies/reagents, understand raw materials, and stock appropriately
- Rotate old supplies to the front and restock as needed
- Plan and accomplish tasks using gained lab experience and judgment
- Be self-sufficient, critical thinker, and know when to refer matters to the technical staff
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- National phlebotomy certification (ASCP, NHA, AMT, or equivalent) is not required but recommended
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program preferred
- BLS certification required
- Minimum of 2–5 years of phlebotomy experience
Qualifications
Gained lab experience and judgment are essential. Self-sufficiency, critical thinking, and the ability to recognize when to refer matters to the technical staff are also crucial.
