About the Role
The Lead Medical Coordinator, under the direction of the Program Director, is responsible for the coordination and implementation of medical services provided to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC). This role involves hiring, training, and supervising medical staff, using sound medical and professional judgment to support the medical, safety, and well-being of UAC while ensuring compliance with agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
Responsibilities
- Provide supervision and guidance to the medical team while monitoring daily practices to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Perform triage assessments to evaluate patient symptoms and overall needs, determining the level of urgency and coordinating the appropriate medical response or referral.
- Actively participate in case staffings and stakeholder meetings, following up with recommendations.
- Compile, prepare, submit, and maintain accurate records, files, forms, statistics, and additional information in accordance with agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
- Effectively communicate with the ORR Medical team as needed.
- Ensure medical services are completed and documented in the UAC Portal within required timeframes and in accordance with agency policy, DFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
- Assume on-call duties after regular business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Complete and submit reports within required timeframes.
- Guide and direct medical staff, providing timely and adequate feedback.
- Provide health education and training for staff and UAC.
- Maintain inventories of medical supplies, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications.
- Develop and implement a fail-safe plan regarding medication administration, counts, label accuracy, and reporting of medication errors.
- Maintain the safety and well-being of children through supervision, adherence to program policies, and appropriate interventions, including the use of approved crisis management techniques.
- Deliver client services and daily interactions within the Sanctuary Model framework.
- Schedule, accompany, and/or provide transportation to medical appointments when needed.
- Ensure medical services are provided in a manner that promotes best practices and facilitates the optimum delivery of quality trauma-informed care to UAC.
- Actively participate in the enhancement and/or improvement of the living and working environment for residents and employees.
- Attend administrative staff meetings, staff retreats, and other team-building activities as scheduled.
- Demonstrate proficiency in knowledge of agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
- Demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity of cultural norms, values, and heritage.
- Complete a mandatory 10-day New Employee Orientation; inability to meet this requirement will conclude employment with the agency.
- Maintain sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
- Adhere to safety training and protocols daily, taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self and others.
- Protect the confidentiality of information or material obtained in service with the organization, including client names and information, services rendered, donor information, investigations, and financial data.
- Adhere to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy.
- Take a solution-oriented approach in interactions and undertakings, promoting collaboration and commitment to the organization’s Mission and Vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Medical Sciences, or related field; or higher health-related qualification (e.g., Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner).
- Minimum of 1 year of employment in public health or a healthcare setting with demonstrated experience in care coordination, health administration, or direct clinical care.
- One-year experience working with children in a child welfare or social-services setting preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN).
- Reliable transportation, valid driver license, and valid vehicle insurance.
- Proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route if working directly with unaccompanied children:
- Varicella: two doses of varicella vaccine (at least 4 weeks apart) OR born in the United States before 1980 with a reported history of chickenpox (verified by an adult present at the time of illness) OR titers indicating varicella immunity OR documentation from healthcare provider verifying previous infection.
- MMR: two doses of MMR vaccine (at least 4 weeks apart) OR titers indicating immunity to all three diseases.
- DTaP or Tdap: Complete primary vaccination series. If primary vaccination series completed in childhood, one Tdap dose in adulthood.
- Influenza: one dose annually during flu season.
Skills
- Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Windows (Microsoft Word, Excel) and a variety of online database systems, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
