About the Role
The Lead Medical Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and implementation of medical services provided to Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC), including hiring, training, and supervising medical staff. This role ensures the medical, safety, and well-being of UAC while maintaining compliance with agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy. The coordinator partners with healthcare professionals to arrange medical services, uphold health and safety standards, manage immunizations, prevent injuries, oversee medication management, and connect UAC with community health and mental health resources.
Responsibilities
- Provide supervision and guidance to the medical team while monitoring daily practices to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Perform triage assessments to evaluate patient symptoms and needs, determining urgency and coordinating appropriate medical responses or referrals.
- Actively participate in case staffings and stakeholder meetings, following up on recommendations.
- Compile, prepare, submit, and maintain accurate records, files, forms, and statistics in accordance with agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
- Communicate effectively with the ORR Medical team as needed.
- Ensure medical services are completed and documented in the UAC Portal within required timeframes and in compliance with agency policies.
- Assume on-call duties after regular business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Complete and submit reports within required timeframes.
- Guide and direct medical staff, providing timely and adequate feedback.
- Provide health education and training for staff and UAC.
- Maintain inventories of medical supplies, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications.
- Develop and implement a fail-safe plan for medication administration, counts, label accuracy, and reporting of medication errors.
- Maintain the safety and well-being of children through supervision, adherence to program policies, and appropriate interventions, including approved crisis management techniques when necessary.
- Deliver client services and daily interactions within the Sanctuary Model framework.
- Schedule, accompany, and/or provide transportation to medical appointments as needed.
- Ensure medical services are provided in a manner that promotes best practices and facilitates trauma-informed care.
- Actively participate in enhancing and improving the living and working environment for residents and employees.
- Attend administrative staff meetings, staff retreats, and other team-building activities as scheduled.
- Demonstrate proficiency in knowledge of agency policy, TDFPS Minimum Standards, and ORR Policy.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity regarding norms, values, and heritage.
- Adhere to safety training and protocols daily, taking precautionary measures to ensure safety and well-being.
- Protect the confidentiality of all organizational information, including client details, services rendered, donor information, investigations, and financial data.
- Adhere to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy.
- Take a solution-oriented approach in interactions and promote collaboration and commitment to the organization’s Mission and Vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Medical Sciences, or a related field; or a higher health-related qualification (e.g., Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner).
- Minimum of 1 year of employment in public health or a healthcare setting with demonstrated experience in care coordination, health administration, or direct clinical care.
- One year of experience working with children in a child welfare or social-services setting preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Licensed Registered Nurse (RN).
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and valid vehicle insurance.
- Proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases transmitted by the respiratory route if working directly with unaccompanied children:
- Varicella: Two doses of varicella vaccine (at least 4 weeks apart), OR born in the United States before 1980 with a reported history of chickenpox (verified by an adult present at the time of illness), OR titers indicating varicella immunity, OR documentation from a healthcare provider verifying previous infection.
- MMR: Two doses of MMR vaccine (at least 4 weeks apart) OR titers indicating immunity to all three diseases.
- DTaP or Tdap: Complete primary vaccination series. If primary series completed in childhood, one DTaP dose in adulthood.
- Influenza: One dose annually during flu season.
- Attendance and successful completion of a 10-day New Employee Orientation is mandatory.
- Sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
