About the role

This opportunity is for a Lead Piping Engineer to join WSP's team supporting mining and metals, oil and gas, heavy industrial projects, and water sectors. The position is based in Salt Lake City, UT, with consideration for Tucson, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; or Reno, NV offices.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of piping engineering discipline
  • Lead small to large projects, interact with all project team members including client, sub-contractors, and on-site construction contractors
  • Develop, plan, evaluate, and recommend solutions for difficult problems
  • Prepare drawings, calculations, and other engineering documentation
  • Supervise the preparation or prepare technical specifications for purchased equipment
  • Coordinate and interface with vendors
  • Prepare technical evaluations of supplier’s proposals
  • Prepare equipment performance specifications
  • Develop technical reports
  • Oversee and check work of other junior and mid-level mechanical engineers and designers
  • Give effective presentations to customers
  • Work with and communicate with project management team
  • Affirm that all work on assigned projects is timely, accurate, and high quality
  • Organize, plan, and coordinate own work as well as the resources assigned on a specific project
  • Perform troubleshooting at operating mines, oil and gas plants, heavy industrial plants, and water treatment facilities
  • Support design of pump stations, and process plant tie-ins
  • Design piping and pipeline systems including line sizing, routing, and material selection
  • Conduct hydraulic calculations using tools like Excel, AFT, or similar software
  • Conduct pipe stress analysis using tools like CAESAR II or AutoPIPE or similar software
  • Use AutoCAD, Revit, or other design programs
  • Prepare and review line lists, valve lists, tie-point lists, and equipment schedules
  • Travel for meetings and site visits, and accept remote assignments as required

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in at least one state in USA with ability to acquire licenses in other states
  • An up-to-date NCEES record
  • 7-10+ years of related engineering experience in an EPCM or similar company
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanical and piping engineering integration into projects
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with customers and vendors
  • Ability to work with administrative supervision and manage multiple priorities
  • Understanding of technical and commercial aspects of projects and proposals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and specialized software packages used for mechanical and piping engineering and design
  • Knowledge of relevant industry codes such as ASME, API

Qualifications

  • MS Degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from ABET accredited program
  • Project Management experience or a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification in an engineering consulting environment
  • Design-Build project execution experience
