About the role

This opportunity is for a Lead Piping Engineer to join WSP's team supporting mining and metals, oil and gas, heavy industrial projects, and water sectors. The position is based in Salt Lake City, UT, with consideration for locations in Tucson, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; or Reno, NV.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of piping engineering discipline on small to large projects.
  • Lead project teams, interact with clients, sub-contractors, and on-site construction contractors.
  • Develop, plan, evaluate, and recommend solutions for difficult problems.
  • Prepare and review technical specifications for purchased equipment.
  • Coordinate and interface with vendors, prepare technical evaluations of supplier proposals, and develop equipment performance specifications.
  • Write and review line lists, valve lists, tie-point lists, and equipment schedules.
  • Perform pipe stress analysis and hydraulic calculations using software like CAESAR II, AutoPIPE, Excel, and AFT.
  • Supervise the preparation or preparation of technical documentation and ensure work meets quality standards.
  • Give effective presentations to customers and work with the project management team.
  • Organize, plan, and coordinate own work and resources assigned on specific projects.
  • Oversee troubleshooting at various types of plants and facilities, including slurry pipelines, tailings systems, concentrate lines, and mine infrastructure.
  • Design pump stations, process plant tie-ins, and raw water, process water, potable water, and wastewater piping systems.
  • Prepare and review drawings, calculations, and other engineering documentation, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Travel for meetings and site visits as needed, approximately 10% - 15%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in at least one state in the USA, with the ability to obtain licenses in other states.
  • An up-to-date NCEES record.
  • 7-10+ years of related engineering experience in an EPCM or similar company.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mechanical and piping engineering integration into projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers, vendors, and administrative supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and specialized software for mechanical and piping engineering.
  • Experience with relevant industry codes such as ASME and API.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Project Management experience or a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Design-Build project execution experience.

Skills

  • AutoCAD, Revit, or other design programs.
  • Microsoft Office applications.
  • Specialized software for mechanical and piping engineering.
