Lead Mechanical Engineer
About the role
This opportunity is for a Lead Piping Engineer to join WSP's team supporting mining and metals, oil and gas, heavy industrial projects, and water sectors. The position is based in Salt Lake City, UT, with consideration for Tucson, AZ; Phoenix, AZ; or Reno, NV offices.
Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of piping engineering discipline
- Lead small to large projects and interact with all project team members, including clients, sub-contractors, and on-site construction contractors
- Contribute to proposal preparation, discipline estimates, and design deliverables
- Develop, plan, evaluate, and recommend solutions for difficult problems
- Prepare drawings, calculations, and other engineering documentation
- Supervise the preparation or prepare technical specifications for purchased equipment
- Coordinate and interface with vendors
- Prepare technical evaluations of supplier's proposals
- Prepare equipment performance specifications
- Develop technical reports
- Organize, plan, and coordinate own work as well as assigned resources
- Perform troubleshooting at various types of plants and facilities
- Design slurry pipelines, tailings systems, concentrate lines, and mine infrastructure
- Support design of pump stations and process plant tie-ins
- Design piping and pipeline systems, including line sizing, routing, and material selection
- Calculate pump and piping systems hydraulically using Excel, AFT, or similar software
- Perform pipe stress analysis using tools like CAESAR II or AutoPIPE
- Prepare and review line lists, valve lists, tie-point lists, and equipment schedules
- Travel for meetings and site visits as required
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in at least one state in USA, with ability to acquire licenses in other states
- An up-to-date NCEES record
- 7-10+ years of related engineering experience in an EPCM or similar company
- Knowledge and understanding of mechanical and piping engineering integration into projects
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with customers and vendors
- Ability to manage multiple priorities
- Understanding of technical and commercial aspects of projects
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and specialized software packages
- Experience with relevant industry codes such as ASME and API
Qualifications
- MS Degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) from ABET accredited program
- Project Management experience or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
- Design-Build project execution experience
Skills
- Experience with slurry pipelines, tailings systems, concentrate lines, and mine infrastructure
- Knowledge of abrasion-resistant materials and corrosion mitigation strategies
- Experience with pump stations, process plant tie-ins, and water treatment facilities
- Experience with raw water, process water, potable water, and wastewater piping systems
- Knowledge of AWWA standards and municipal/industrial water infrastructure
- Experience with pump and piping system hydraulic calculations using Excel, AFT, or similar software
- Experience with pipe stress analysis using tools like CAESAR II or AutoPIPE
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or other design programs
