Lead Insulator

About the Role

Performs work as an insulator requiring advanced levels of professional skill. Performs installation, repair, and preventative maintenance of insulation to campus main utility systems and associated air conditioning refrigeration systems. Provides training and mentorship to less experienced employees.

Responsibilities

• Training and Mentorship (15%): Leads, guides, and/or trains others in applicable procedures and techniques. Completes the required training and testing to maintain applicable licensing.
• Safety (10%): Promotes a safe workplace and safe work practices. Complies with all applicable OSHA safety mandates and enforces University LOTO & PPE policy. Complies with all EPA/DHEC rules. Promotes positive and productive relationships within and between shops. Removes and disposes of insulation and cleans tools. Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
• Insulation (50%): Insulates and removes (when needed) chilled water piping and equipment, hot water piping, steam piping, condensate piping, refrigeration piping, duct work, and associated mechanical equipment. Performs insulation using several material types.
• Applications and Mastics (25%): Understands applications and applies various appropriate mastics to insulation systems. Operates saws, drills, pin-welder, and related hand tools. Builds construction-type scaffolding. Reads, modifies, and recommends modifications of blueprints. Estimates cost, time, and materials of insulation projects.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent and general maintenance experience related to the area of employment.
