About the role

This position is located within Environmental Management Services (EMS) of a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The primary purpose of this position is to exercise technical and administrative supervision over subordinate workers in supporting and performing tasks associated with EMS goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Delegated responsibility for assigning staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and project-by-project basis.
  • Communicates instructions from supervisor to the employee and validates the completion of work assigned.
  • Captures and coordinates projects with nurses and other area supervisors to ensure timely and successful completions.
  • Engages with all employees to provide purpose, direction, and motivation in accomplishing all tasks, while training employees in proper procedures and techniques to meet or exceed desired outcomes.
  • Reports progress of employees to the Supervisor and makes recommendations as necessary, on all matters to include the progress of work, any infractions of policies and procedures, and assures all safety compliance.
  • Performs the full range of housekeeping duties, including cleaning areas such as outpatient surgery, outpatient clinics, central sterile, clean rooms, patient areas, laboratories, pharmacies, offices, support and patient areas, isolation rooms, storage rooms, corridors, stairwells, toilet rooms, shower rooms, and other medical center areas as required.
  • Uses proper procedures in dust mopping, damp mopping, emptying waste receptacles, emptying and replacing medical waste receptacles, washing walls, cleaning light fixtures, and surfaces as necessary, refilling toilet tissue, paper towels, and soap dispensers.
  • Makes beds and turns mattresses.
  • May be required to take the lead in textile distribution and inventory management, uniform management, and Patient Assistance Program; provides on-the-job training to all employees assigned. Identifies and recommends remedial training to the Supervisor based on observations made in the work site.
  • Moves furniture and sets up conference rooms for meetings, trainings, or other events.

Requirements

The position is required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which the performance and conduct will be evaluated. The position requires occasional bending/stooping, crouching, and kneeling. Lifting up to 50 pounds is required approximately 40% of the time spent standing, 40% of the time spent walking, and 20% of the time spent sitting. Hearing and visual acuity are essential. Manual dexterity is needed to use a phone and operate equipment.
