About the Role

The Lead Funeral Director leads funeral operational staff, provides professional funeral services to client families, and acts as a company ambassador to the community.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures every client family is presented with all service and merchandise options — every family, every option, every time.
  • Contributes to the overall efficiency of the location by maintaining open and effective communication and accurate, timely client files.
  • Improves market share through participation in community events, groups, organizations, and other community relationships as assigned.
  • Carries out other projects and duties as assigned (e.g., car washing, building and equipment repair, pre-need arrangement planning).
  • Oversees all team members participating in services, ensuring each understands their role and professionally represents the location.
  • Communicates performance feedback to team members regarding successful performance and areas needing improvement.
  • Leads and oversees all onboarding and training of new hires.
  • Works on-call/first call in rotation as assigned (e.g., phone, face-to-face, at the hospital, hospice, or residence).
  • Leads initial transfer of decedents, embalms, dresses, cosmetizes, caskets, and prepares deceased as needed (per appropriate licensing) according to family instructions.
  • Meets with client families to listen, educate, and arrange personalized funeral services, ensuring high-quality experiences.
  • Utilizes systems and technology (e.g., Matthews and Aurora Advisor) to review merchandise options, enter contracts, and complete necessary forms during arrangement conversations.
  • Completes tasks and details resulting from the arrangement conference.
  • Ensures proper paperwork, including permits and certificates, is completed timely and in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Conducts and attends funeral services regularly.
  • Leads all post-service follow-ups as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid state-issued funeral director/embalmer license (as per state licensing requirements).
  • Completed mortuary school.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience as a funeral director.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license with a clear driving record.
