Lead ED Tech - Methodist Emergency

About the Role

Under the supervision of the charge nurse and/or physician, administers care for patients of all age groups with both acute and chronic health problems. The ED Tech Lead provides direct patient care encompassing the nursing assistant role, unit secretary role, phlebotomy, and 12-lead ECG tracings. Serves as a resource to other technicians, trains new technicians, resolves scheduling needs and payroll for ED technicians, and is responsible for restraint audits. Orders primary supplies for the ED and mentors peers to improve performance and efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Precepts and trains new ED technicians; prepares orientation, training materials, and yearly competency education.
• Serves as a knowledge resource and shares expertise as appropriate.
• Participates in cost containment, development/maintenance of a positive work environment, and minimizing overtime.
• Attends required classes and meetings; orders supplies for departmental needs.
• Reviews charts for restraint audits and participates in unit committees.
• Adheres to all policies and procedures.
• Actively participates in planning and implementing measures to maintain and improve the quality of patient care.
• Applies protective devices correctly; anticipates patient requests and makes rounds hourly.
• Assists RN in planning patient care and maintains a safe unit environment.
• Washes hands before and after patient contact; handles soiled linen, equipment, and instruments per protocol.
• Maintains sterile asepsis; changes and secures dressings; maintains isolation technique.
• Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately; keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment.
• Orders department supplies as Lawson requester; maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses station, utility rooms) clean and stocked.
• Restocks equipment in patient rooms; accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers, and other pertinent equipment.
• Completes appropriate work forms for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service.
• Provides direct patient care demonstrating mission and values, including:
  • Oxygen therapy (pulse oximetry, oral/nasal airways insertion, suctioning, O2 administration via cannula, venturi mask, simple mask, non-rebreather mask).
  • Foley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement (excludes children and infants).
  • Performs and documents diagnostic tests (phlebotomy, 12-lead ECG recording).
  • Performs lab testing as appropriate; provides and documents fluid management per policy (peripheral IV site care, IV flow rate observation, peripheral IV catheter removal).
  • Provides care for patients requiring restraint or seclusion; performs splint application.
  • Obtains adequate lab specimens; performs bedside lab testing and associated quality control.
• Observes and measures patient information per policy:
  • Temperatures (oral, rectal, axillary under RN direction).
  • Pulse (apical and radial), blood pressure, height, weight, intake/output, pain ratings.
• Demonstrates thorough understanding and working knowledge of all necessary equipment.
• Performs and documents special procedures per policy:
  • Application of heat/cold, decubitus care, pelvic exam setup, I&D setup, surgical skin prep.
  • Applies ace/TEDS/binders, removes leads, assists with coughing/deep breathing and physical exams.
  • Oral/nasopharyngeal suctioning, trache care (>72 hrs), suction equipment maintenance.
  • Application of hypo/hyperthermia unit, care of oxygen equipment, room setup for trauma.
  • Suture setup, moderate sedation setup, patient prep for procedures.
• Demonstrates a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.
• Promotes patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment.
• Performs direct patient care impacting patient satisfaction:
  • Maintains a pleasant environment; keeps rooms visually clean and uncluttered.
  • Monitors patients post-procedure; participates in admission, transport, and discharge.
  • Assists with in-bed mobility, transfers (bed/WC/stretcher/chair), and positioning for alignment/comfort.
• Assists patients with nutrition management:
  • Prepares patients for meals (hand washing, mouth care, positioning).
  • Delivers trays within 5 minutes of arrival; documents intake per policy.
  • Feeds dependent patients; provides fresh water, ice, and snacks.
• Provides assistance with elimination procedures:
  • Offers/removes bedpans and urinals; provides catheter care per policy.
  • Removes Foley catheters; applies condom catheters; empties urinary drainage bags using goggles/gloves.
  • Collects specimens for ordered tests; inserts rectal tube; catheterizes female/male patients.
  • Provides ostomy care; breaks up/removes fecal impaction.
  • Communicates intake/output imbalances exceeding 100 mL to the Lead RN and patient caregiver.
• Coaches and mentors staff; responsible for restraint audits.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days (American Heart Association).
• Prior experience as a technician within the emergency department.

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $19.16 per hour to $31.04 per hour. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors including experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked, and compensation model.
