Job Summary

The Lead Driver plays a critical leadership role within Operations by providing safe, efficient, and reliable hauling services while supporting daily route execution across assigned territories. This position acts as a working lead—performing driving duties while also serving as the primary resource for route guidance, new driver training, equipment support, and communication between drivers, dispatch, and operations leadership.

This position ensures teammates adhere to safety standards, company policies, and high-quality service expectations to deliver an exceptional customer experience. Reports To Operations Supervisor.

Essential Job Duties

  • Serve as the point of contact for route questions, operational challenges, and day-to-day driver needs.
  • Assist with route planning, sequencing, and operational efficiency improvements.
  • Support dispatch by relaying route updates, delays, or service issues in real time.
  • Conduct ride-alongs, performance observations, and coaching for new or existing drivers.
  • Provide coverage for absent teammates by running routes as needed.
  • Model and enforce all company safety procedures, DOT regulations, PPE standards, and safe driving behaviors.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, or incidents immediately to leadership.
  • Support post-incident reviews and corrective-action discussions.
  • Ensure proper vehicle inspections (pre- and post-trip) and documentation are completed accurately.
  • Train newly hired drivers on equipment operation, route navigation, company expectations, customer service, and safety protocols.
  • Mentor drivers to improve performance, productivity, and safety awareness.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to Operations Leadership and the Safety Team regarding driver development needs.
  • Represent the company professionally in all customer interactions, addressing concerns and escalating issues appropriately.
  • Aid drivers in resolving service challenges to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Assist drivers in troubleshooting equipment or mechanical concerns and escalate issues promptly.
  • Communicate equipment needs to Maintenance for timely repair and preventive servicing.
  • Monitor proper use of vehicles, tools, and company assets.

Scope of Responsibility

The Lead Driver provides day-to-day guidance, training, and support to drivers while performing route duties. This role influences route efficiency, safety performance, customer satisfaction, and driver development. Although the Lead Driver does not serve as a formal supervisor, the position provides functional leadership to the driver team, assists with onboarding and skill development, and supports Operations Leadership in identifying performance gaps, safety concerns, and training needs. Decisions made in this role directly impact service quality, operational efficiency, equipment readiness, and compliance with safety and DOT standards.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of DOT requirements, FMCSA guidelines, and safe driving practices.
  • Ability to operate all assigned vehicle types safely and effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to make sound decisions independently.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid CDL (A or B depending on equipment type) with an acceptable driving record.
  • Minimum of 2 years of commercial driving experience, preferably in waste & recycling or a similar industry.
  • Prior experience mentoring or training others preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Regularly lift and carry heavy loads, often up to 70 pounds or more.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, and reaching to collect garbage.
  • Long hours of driving, often in congested or hazardous conditions.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • High noise levels from trucks and machinery.
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials and unpleasant odors.
