About the role

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking a Layout Specialist for the Machine Shop in Auburn, Washington. In this role, you will ensure components are accurately laid out and prepared for machining operations, evaluate job assignments, acquire specifications, and use advanced computing systems for precise layouts. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze engineering data, troubleshoot processes, and develop solutions for complex machining challenges while upholding safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate job assignments based on size and complexity, establishing priorities using written and verbal tie-ins.
• Acquire necessary drawings, Boeing (BAC) specifications, and documents using computing systems such as Bold/Web and CATIA.
• Determine appropriate media for layout processes, including coordinate measuring machines (CMM), CNC, and digital data.
• Perform precise layouts of parts using measuring tools (e.g., height gauges, sine bars, micrometers) on surface tables.
• Analyze CATIA information, including digital data and overlays, to support quality assurance, engineering, and production needs.
• Verify drawing standards by digitalizing photo contact masters (PCM) to ensure compliance with NC or CNC machine specifications.
• Troubleshoot and edit media Tryout (MTO) to enhance operational efficiency.
• Design and set up shop aids for complex machine operations to facilitate production.
• Develop experimental processes (e.g., shot peening, heat treating, plating) to achieve dimensionally accurate parts.
• Operate overhead cranes to position parts and tools accurately during machining operations.
• Plan and sequence work assignments, applying shop math, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate necessary dimensions.
• Investigate and resolve engineering rejections by recommending effective machining methods and processes.
• Utilize geometric dimensioning and tolerance interpretation to ensure optimal material fit during problem-solving.
• Lay out guidelines and reference points on tooling and parts for subsequent machining operations, ensuring production accuracy.
• Maintain personal and tool certifications, and handle and dispose of hazardous materials in an approved manner.
• Collaborate with machine operators to accomplish difficult setups and machining operations, ensuring quality and efficiency.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards

• Perform physical tasks including lifting weights ranging from 10–15 lbs to 15–35 lbs.
• Engage in movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.
• Work in environments involving contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.
• Operate near moving parts, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.
• Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.
• Use personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet.

Requirements

• 3+ years of manufacturing and/or quality experience.
• 1+ years of experience utilizing and following detailed work instructions, reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, or specifications.
• 1+ years of experience working with precision measuring tools.
• 1+ years of experience using CATIA.
• 1+ years of experience using computer-based online drawing retrieval systems.
• 1+ years of experience operating metrology devices such as CMM, PCMM, or laser tracker.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 35 pounds frequently within an 8-hour shift.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ years of experience programming and operating Coordinated Measurement Machine (CMM) using PC-DMIS software.
• 1+ years of experience working with Mastercam.
• 1+ years of experience with the system ENOVIA.
• 1+ years of experience with machined part layout.
• 1+ years of experience using a Faro Arm.
