Job Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety, this position enforces state, county, and municipal laws, rules, regulations, and school policies for the protection and security of students and employees of the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Key duties include:

• Patrol the campus parking lot, grounds, building, and outside perimeter to ensure safety.
• Prevent crime, detect violations of the law, and protect property.
• Develop and submit written safety reports.
• Respond to complaints, reports of violations, and requests for assistance involving on-campus students and employees.
• Serve as a first response to requests from students and employees concerning campus trespassers.
• Liaise with local law enforcement, when necessary.
• Follow established law enforcement protocol, conduct preliminary investigations of complaints, issue warnings and citations, or apprehend and arrest violators of laws and regulations.
• Document incidents and submit police reports.
• Respond to campus emergencies, providing assistance and directing traffic and/or personnel.
• Liaise with local law enforcement and emergency services personnel when necessary.
• Document incidents and submit necessary reports.
• Testify in court and other legal proceedings, including administrative hearings and proceedings for determining juvenile cases.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

• A high school diploma, law enforcement experience, and certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with Section 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.
• A current SC Driver’s License.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role.
• Knowledge of modern law enforcement officer techniques and procedures.
• Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence; knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel.
• Knowledge of the laws one is responsible for enforcing; knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies.
• Ability to evaluate situations and make good decisions.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to deal firmly, yet tactfully, with the general public, students, parents, and employees.
• Ability to effectively interview witnesses and suspects.
• Ability to use a personal computer and its associated software.
• Ability to read and comprehend written materials.
