Job Summary
LEADS, SCHEDULES AND ASSISTS CREW ENGAGED IN GARDENING WORK AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE OF CITY PARKS, AND GROUNDS SURROUNDING CITY FACILITIES AND PROPERTIES.
Representative Duties
- Schedules and assists crews in renovating, planting, cultivating, and trimming lawns, shrubs, and flowerbeds.
- Schedules and assists crews in watering, mowing, raking, spraying, and fertilizing lawns, shrubs, flower beds, trees, and ground covers.
- Inspects contract maintenance sites for compliance with contractual requirements.
- Informs supervisor and/or contractor of violations and necessary changes to meet City specifications.
- Meets with contractors providing a variety of services (e.g. installation of fences and bollards, landscape planting).
- Inspects final work product to ensure that it meets City requirements.
- Responsible for the proper use of pesticides and herbicides.
- Prepares work orders.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records including records of employee attendance, injuries, and accidents on the job.
- Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints and takes appropriate action.
- Makes budget recommendations to supervisor.
- Documents and recommends disciplinary action for employees.
- Prepares and/or provides input to employee performance evaluation.
- Orders materials, supplies and equipment.
- Fulfills safety rules and regulations.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Requirements
- Knowledge: Horticulture, landscaping, and grounds maintenance; care, maintenance, and planting of trees, plants, grasses, flowers, and shrubs; use and application of fertilizers and pesticides; safety practices used in application of pesticides and in the operation of power tools and equipment; mathematics and recordkeeping; guidelines for maintaining playground equipment; athletic field plans, layouts, and maintenance; safety practices and procedures; supervisory principles and techniques; effective customer service techniques.
- Ability: Operate and maintain gardening tools and power equipment; follow written and oral instructions; prepare and maintain written records and reports; supervise and train crews; perform mathematical computations; read and interpret blueprints; communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing; learn and apply City codes, and ordinances; learn and apply state and local laws regarding pesticides.
- Skills: Use a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment; read and write in English at an appropriate level; deal effectively with the public and other employees.
- Education, Training and Experience: High school graduation or equivalent; college-level or vocational school coursework in gardening and/or horticulture is desirable; three years of recent, paid work experience performing gardening and grounds maintenance work which includes operating power equipment.
- Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C driver license; must be able to obtain state certification for pesticide applications within one year from date of hire.
