Lateral - Patrol Deputy

Lateral transfer opportunity for DPSST-certified law enforcement officers. Position enforces the laws of this state and county and provides residents with a full range of law enforcement and related social services on demand, as prescribed by Oregon law, county ordinance, and judicial precedent.

Responsibilities

• Enforce the laws of this state and county
• Provide service of court documents
• Enforce traffic laws; operate emergency response vehicles
• Stop vehicles and pedestrians for enforcement of state traffic and criminal laws
• Inspect vehicles; serve arrest and search warrants
• Effect the arrest of suspects; write reports
• Read and interpret legal document decisions; use a computer
• Use a firearm and non-lethal weaponry with a high degree of accuracy as required
• Operate two-way radio system under normal and stressful conditions
• Testify in court proceedings
• Participate in special enforcement activities (drug eradication, DUII task force, etc.)
• Perform support functions for other agencies on a routine and emergency basis
• Respond to nuisance complaints involving noise or animals
• Provide information to public on miscellaneous topics
• Process found property; search for missing persons
• Mediate neighborhood disputes

Requirements

• Must possess a current Oregon DPSST law enforcement certification
• Currently employed as a law enforcement officer, with a minimum of two (2) consecutive years of full-time employment with the current agency
• Must successfully pass an intensive background investigation
• Work is primarily performed in the field and from an emergency vehicle
• Requires bending, color identification, gripping with hands and fingers, hearing alarms, hearing voice conversation, keyboarding
• Ability to lift prone (unwilling or unconscious) persons, operate passenger vehicles, pulling, pushing, reaching, running
• Ability to sit, stand for long periods of time, and walk/run over rough terrain
• A considerable amount of driving is required
• Work involves exposure to dust/pollen, extreme outside temperatures, noise, and contagious diseases

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week.

Selection Process

• Screening of applications by Command Staff
• Comprehensive background investigation
• Psychological evaluation
• Physical testing
• Applicants may be disqualified after unsuccessful completion of any phase of evaluation

Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment drug screen. Presence of non-prescribed drugs, including marijuana, will result in disqualification. Offer is conditional upon satisfactory results of a post-offer medical and hearing exam conducted at county expense.

This is a union position represented by Douglas County Law Enforcement Association. All lateral deputies will serve a twelve (12) to eighteen (18) month probationary period at the pleasure of the Sheriff and may be terminated during that time without recourse.
